Growing complexity in IT careers

Sandra Olivier - Wednesday, October 19, 2011

A recent article in Recruitment International revealed some interesting stats around the growing complexity of careers in the IT employment industry in the UK. This is both from the demand from clients and the need for new skills and practices as the industry advances.

The daily lives of IT professionals everywhere are being affected due to the rapid technological changes and the ever-intricate legalities of working and managing within this sector.

This puts the people who hire and manage IT workers under growing pressure. The success with which this complexity is managed can determine whether the most highly skilled employees are retained or lost in what is increasingly a shortage area.

A demand for skilled IT employees to develop new software and hardware technologies has resulted from the expansion of computer use. New and specialized IT job opportunities will increasingly rise out of evolving technologies and employer practices.

People with both technical and communication skills are now important as companies seek to hire employees that can handle various responsibilities.

So what are the hot skills now in the Information Technology industry in South Africa? We asked our internal experts their thoughts on the topic:

There seems to be a growing need for skilled and experienced developers.

  1. Software development and programming (.Net Developers, especially C#, Web and Java)
  2. ASP.Net Developers
  3. Solution Specialist (Business Analysts, Analysts and SAP consultants)

“Clients like to see passion – those young developers, with little or no formal experience, who can show the stuff they developed since their 4th birthday is the ones who get in. The clients seem interested in the ones who do more than just develop from 8 – 5. They want the ones who live and breathe development. “

So there you have it, the industry is changing as rapidly as the technology. Although the above highlights some of the needed skills, Communicate Personnel are able to assist any career seekers in the IT industry. For advice on how to manage your career in this ever changing environment speak to one of our specialist IT recruitment consultants.
