How to find a work/life “blend” in 2012

Sandra Olivier - Tuesday, January 10, 2012

At the start of each New Year, individuals make personal promises with the desire to discover, advance, endure, or achieve something new and innovative. The lines between work and life have been blurred for years in IT jobs. I'm not saying that this is necessarily a bad thing; it's just the pace of the world in which we live. But the reality is that it's futile for many of us to completely separate home and work life, so we've learned to bring our workplace tools and skills home to better manage an integrated lifestyle.

We offer some tips on how to find your work/life blend this year in your IT job:

Reflect
The best place to start when trying to formulate a plan for your work/life blend is to reflect on the past year. Identify the times where you were specifically busy, and find the reason why. Was it due to suppliers letting you down, bad planning, bad management? This will help you to realize where you need to make a change in the way you do things during the upcoming year.

It’s all about choices
Many people waste their time on activities or people that add no value. It’s important to take stock and eliminate activities that add no benefit to your work day. You may even be able to leave work earlier if you make a conscious effort to limit the time spent on unimportant issues, procrastination, unproductive meetings, or unnecessary correspondence.

Schedule and plan to help keep the chaos away
A set routine helps keep your boundaries—and your mind—clear. It’s important to learn how to log off and focus on you rather than work for a while. By knowing what you have to do in any given day or week, you’re taking steps towards achieving the perfect life balance.

Keep things in perspective
We tend to over-analyze every aspect of our day to day lives, and often times that results in the unnecessary build-up of stress. Sometimes things are just not going to work out as you planned. That’s life things happen that you can’t always control. It’s best just to deal with the situation at hand and move on.

So don’t wait, start getting things in order to ensure that in 2012 you actually do find a realistic work/life blend.
