Ready to snap? How to deal with end of year office stress

Sandra Olivier - Thursday, December 08, 2011

It's been a difficult year and things are not letting up. You feel as if you're on a treadmill and just cannot get ahead. The holidays are fast approaching, and it’s almost time to start performing all of your end-of-year business duties. Here's how to get to the end of the year without falling apart.

Maintain Perspective
Maintaining a healthy perspective on your work and life is probably the best way to avoid anxiety at work especially during this time of the year. No matter how important your job is to you, keep in mind all of the other things that play a big role in your life, such as family, friends, and hobbies. Keep in mind that everybody is feeling similar to you and that a short temper is not helping anybody.

Avoid negativity
It’s easy to get caught up in the negativity. Avoid the water cooler chats if all people are discussing is how tired and overworked they are feeling. Rather focus on positive conversations like vacation plans and opportunities to reunite with family during the holiday season.

Random interruptions
Interruptions keep employees from getting their work done - telephones, walk-in visits, supervisor's demands. Especially during this time of the year, it seems that people have to work so much harder to get their focus back on the task. The best solution for this is to encourage proper time management, delegation of responsibilities and clarification of expectations.

See the Light!
When lunch time comes, take the break and get out of the office. This will break your day up and recharge some of the energy you’ve spent in the morning. There are several contributors to stress in the office from which you need a break; fluorescent light and sitting in the same position for extended periods of time are a couple of examples.

The holidays will be over, tax season and year end will be over. Your co-workers will still be your co-workers, so how you treat them now will be remembered when the stressful time is over.
