The holiday cheer and New Year's celebrations have come to an end, and employees across the country are heading back to the office. As is normal during this time of the year people will be vowing to lose weight, stop smoking, stick to a budget, save money, find a better job, become more organized, exercise more, be more patient, eat better, and … and…. and…
Although new years resolutions might seems silly as you never stick to them. Maybe this year is the perfect time to say “hello” to workplace happiness and “good-bye” to the bad habits that make you miserable and hinder your professional success.
Take a break:
Although people love to pretend they are too busy to take lunch in IT jobs the reality is that, you do have to eat every day and a couple of minutes extra might just help to revitalise your mind for that next meeting. Evidence shows that more work is not better work. In fact, just the opposite is true. Plus, by ignoring your body’s and your mind’s need for a break, you’re risking your health. So try to leave your desk for lunch, get up from your chair every hour and walk around, or fight your workaholic impulses and leave on time. A little less stress would be good for her health. In my own experience, I actually get more done on days when I manage to step out for a break now and again.
Tackle a New Skill:
Technology is constantly advancing, and one of the barriers to advancement for many in Information Technology careers is a lack of the latest skills. Identify what skill you know you need - the one that you always need help with, or the one that prevents you from landing the plum assignments - and commit to learning it. It will open new possibilities for you in your current job but also for future career moves.
Fit in Fitness:
The evidence is in for fitness. Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. Studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis. In short, exercise keeps you healthy and makes you look and feel better.
De-clutter:
Some people thrive on clutter but the reality is life is complex enough there is nothing like doing a bit of de-cluttering to ensure you stay ahead of the game in your IT career. Start with cleaning up your desks, try and make your workspace more cosy and comforting. If you resolve to make the change in the first two weeks of the year, you can do it and move on. And who knows? You may get used to putting things back where you found them.
Go positive:
Start looking at your job with kind eyes. Make a list of all the positive aspects of your job: perhaps you work in an office and don't have to suffer the weather; perhaps you deal with people that you can learn from. Make it your resolution to look at things a little more positively this year!
So what resolutions will you look at this year to ensure workplace happiness?
