How to stand out in your career, instead of blending in

March 4, 2013

Standing out in a crowded marketplace isn't always easy. And these days, people have seen it all, which means you might only get ahead if you use a compelling and unique approach. Establishing yourself as a best-in-class professional, capable of easily adapting to and thriving during fluctuating economic cycles, will set you apart and enable you to more quickly in landing a career-enhancing opportunity.

To succeed you must stand out from the crowd. Here are three ways:

Carve yourself a niche
Just doing your job is not necessarily going to allow you to
stand out from the crowd. So go above the norm and get known for something specific. Be known as the employee that always goes beyond. If you see that something needs to be done and nobody is doing it, do it.

Don't Try To Fit A Certain Mold
Often employees are conditioned to feel as if they must fit a certain mold. While there is some truth to this matter, it's far more important to
embrace your unique traits and turn them into a platform for your career success. It's your job to prove to employers that your personality, experiences, and unique traits fit their position more precisely than the rest.

Make sure you add stuff, not take the stuff away
We've all worked with people whose sole contribution in meetings or
projects is to shoot holes in other people's ideas or work. It's definitely important to always consider all sides of a project and point out problems, but at least try to offer a solution. Lots of people can find problems, but very few go the extra step and suggest what should be done instead. Just picking out flaws is easy, and it doesn't earn you respect in anyone's eyes.

Career success in any type of job market is often as much about perseverance, preparation, and timing as it is about talent and passion. Keeping an open mind about the path you take to reach your long-term career objectives is one of the best ways to ensure that you are seen as highly marketable.
