Top 3 strategies to keep to your New Year’s resolutions

January 9, 2013

It can be daunting when your list of New Year's Resolutions is as long as your holiday shopping list. In addition to the post-holiday slump, not being able to keep your resolutions by February, March or even late January may increase your anxiety. When your holiday decorations are packed up and stored away, the frustration of an unused gym membership or other reminders of failed resolutions can make you feel hopeless early in the year. Here are a couple of ways to stick to your resolutions this year.

Accountable
The best way to stick to a new year's resolution is to enlist the help of an 'accountability buddy. Tell your goals to a few close family and friends who will be honest with you and keep you on the right track. Having someone to share your struggles and successes with makes your journey to a healthier lifestyle much easier and less intimidating.

Turn habits into resolutions
Instead of trying to focus your mind on a new resolution try and break it down into smaller habits. By immediately breaking down each resolution and seeing what the smallest habit could be, your chances of succeeding will be 50% higher than if you leave it vague. There is nothing more, you make it so stupidly easy, and simple for yourself to create that habit, that there is almost no way you can fail with it.

Don't beat yourself up
Perfection is unattainable. Remember that minor missteps when reaching your goals are completely normal and OK. Don't give up completely because you ate a brownie and broke your diet, or skipped the gym for a week because you were busy. Everyone has ups and downs; resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track.
