Is this IT Security “stuff” really such a big deal?

July 18, 2012

For many of us, the internet is one of those things that you expect to 'just works'. You switch on your computer click on that little browser icon and there you go. A large proportion of users don't stop to think about the webserver software that sits on data centers to drive cloud-based applications on their desktop or mobile device and, to a degree, why should they?

The reality of the web and Information Technology security only starts to kick in once your business has been a target by a virus, or a phishing or social engineering scam effects, innocent employees.

Research conducted among IT professionals in March 2012 found that while the trend toward virtualization is increasing among companies, 55% of companies were not interested in security for their virtual infrastructure.

Raj Samani, CTO of McAfee EMEA, commented at the recent ITWeb Security Summit that the Internet and social media have opened up a massive market for potential targets of social engineering attacks and this problem is only expected to worsen over time.

The reality is that IT security is becoming a bigger and bigger priority for any organization. Unfortunately, many organizations only learn how to respond to security incidents after suffering attacks. By this time, incidents often become much more costly than needed. A breach of security can result in the loss of millions of data records, affect millions of people, and wind up costing the affected businesses a lot of money.

The biggest security risks today are associated with the way most organizations think about security management and conduct security operations.
